Matthew 25:14-30

Again, this Sunday, we take our scripture from Matthew 25.  Throughout this chapter, Jesus describes the “kingdom of heaven” in metaphor and story.  This Sunday, we hear the Parable of the Talents, Matthew 25:14-30.  The kingdom of God will be like this. . . .  What are the signs?  How will we know?  What shall we look for?  How does God speak into these questions for us today?

This Sunday is Thanksgiving Sunday, Pledge Sunday, and Transgender Day of Remembrance. We will also be collecting the General Church Thanksgiving Offering for our Disciples-related colleges, universities, and seminaries. We will be celebrating, acknowledging, and holding all of this together.

Matthew 25:1-13

For the rest of November, we will be focusing on the chapter of Matthew 25.  Throughout this chapter, Jesus describes the “kingdom of heaven” in metaphor and story.  This Sunday, we hear the Parable of the Bridesmaids, Matthew 25:1-13.  The kingdom of God will be like this. . . .  What are the signs?  How will we know?  What shall we look for?  How does God speak into these questions for us today?

Ezekiel 37:1-14

This Sunday, we shift away from our journey in Exodus, skip about 1000 years, and hear from the ancient prophet Ezekiel.  Ezekiel was an Israelite priest living in exile in the city of Babylon sometime between 593 and 571 BCE.  Our scripture comes from Ezekiel’s journey with God into the Valley of Dry Bones.  What valleys of dry bones do we face in our lives?  Is it possible for the saints in our lives to continue to live—and to continue to inspire us—despite the deserts we face?
